What the Ground Does in Tilton
The river valley gives Tilton some of the better overburden in our service area — sand and gravel deposits that in places support shallower wells and more reliable yields than granite alone would provide. That is genuinely useful, and it means Tilton drilling estimates tend to carry narrower ranges than hill-country towns like Sanbornton.
Away from the valley, on the rising ground toward Sanbornton and the Northfield line, it reverts to the standard bedrock picture. Tilton's older village properties occasionally still have dug wells or abandoned shallow wells on site alongside a modern drilled well, and those old wells matter: an unsealed abandoned well is a direct contamination route into the aquifer, and it is a liability that stays with the property until somebody deals with it properly.
Tilton Note
If your Tilton property has an old dug well in the yard alongside the working well, find out whether it was properly decommissioned. Sealing an abandoned well is straightforward work and it removes a real contamination risk.
